Extension Activities
Grandma McBee's Slow Adventure Game
Materials Needed: Obstacle course items (e.g., cones, chairs, string), stopwatch.
Activity: Set up an obstacle course that children need to navigate slowly, just like Grandma McBee. The goal is to teach patience and careful movement. They can pretend to be Grandma McBee, moving slowly and mindfully through the course.
Discussion: After the game, discuss how moving slowly felt and what they noticed around them that they might have missed if they were rushing.
Physical Development: Develops gross motor skills through careful movement and balance in an obstacle course.
Create a “Slow Down” Journal
Materials Needed: Blank notebooks, crayons, stickers, glue.
Activity: Encourage children to create a journal where they draw or write about things they notice when they slow down, just like Grandma McBee. They can include sketches of nature, notes about their feelings, or stories of moments when being slow helped them.
Discussion: Ask the children to share their favorite journal entry and what they learned from slowing down.
Language & Literacy Skills: Encourages writing and descriptive skills as children document what they notice when they slow down, fostering expressive language development.
Empathy Circle Time
Materials Needed: Story prompts or cards with scenarios.
Activity: Gather children in a circle and present different scenarios where someone might need patience or understanding (e.g., waiting for an elderly person to cross the street). Encourage children to discuss how they would feel and how they can show empathy in these situations.
Discussion: Highlight how Grandma McBee shows patience and understanding, and encourage the kids to come up with their ways to be kind and empathetic.
Social & Emotional Development: Directly addresses social and emotional learning by discussing empathy, patience, and understanding through scenarios and reflections.
Grandparent Interview Project
Materials Needed: Interview worksheets (pre-made with simple questions), pencils, audio recorders (optional).
Activity: In advance of Grandparents Day, send home an interview worksheet where students can ask their grandparents or an older adult in their life questions about their childhood, favorite memories, or lessons learned. On Grandparents Day, students can share their findings with the class, or they can create a "Class Book of Wisdom" with all the answers compiled together.
Extension: For a digital twist, students can create a video or audio recording of their interview, which can be played in the classroom or shared with their family.
Cognitive Development: Develops critical thinking and communication skills through structured questioning and reflection on the wisdom shared by elders.
Dress Like Grandma McBee Role-Play
Materials Needed: Dress-up clothes, props (glasses, shawls, hats).
Activity: Set up a role-play activity where children dress up like Grandma McBee and act out scenes from the book or create their own scenarios where she teaches important life lessons.
Discussion: Talk about how it feels to move slowly and how they can show patience, kindness, and understanding to their own grandparents or elderly people in their lives.
Creativity & Imagination: Fosters creativity as children design outfits and act out scenarios, encouraging imaginative thinking and expression.
Grandma’s Recipe Book Family Cooking Time
Materials Needed: Recipe cards, a family recipe, or ingredients from the pantry.
Activity: Cook a simple family recipe together, ideally something that an elder in the family might enjoy or a recipe passed down from a grandparent. While cooking, share stories about Grandma McBee or a real-life grandma. This activity highlights the wisdom and traditions passed down through generations and encourages storytelling.
Extension: Create a small "Grandma’s Recipe Book" where everyone contributes a favorite recipe or a memory associated with food and family.
Cultural Awareness & Appreciation: Highlights cultural traditions and familial connections through cooking and sharing recipes, enhancing appreciation for heritage
